Dear Precious Ones,
Although I am still quite a while away from meeting you, I want you to know that I have been praying for many years about how to be a good and influential example and mother to you. As I have prayed, there are some things I’ve been meditating on and stirring in my heart for you. This letter is (hopefully) the first of many to come.
Each one of your journeys will surely be different, but for each of you all of these things are my heart’s desire for your lives. Of course, you will live your own lives and make your own choices, and my desire is not to control or force your lives to be how I want them, but to equip you to make the best choices on your own and propel you into your own encounter with Jesus.
If you can lay hold of and put into practice these six things, you are well on your way to a victorious and full life that pleases God.
1. You are called to fear the Lord.
The first thing you must know – is that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. (Prov. 9:10)
Why is this important? Because wisdom in this world is necessary. I want you to be wise. I’m not talking about knowledge, intelligence, or your ability to make straight A’s in school. I’m talking about wisdom – the thing that will get you through this life on the right path. The thing that will keep you from making wrong choices. The thing that will cause you to think about not just the moment, but also the future, and all of the consequences your choices will have. You must have wisdom.
How do you get wisdom?
You get the fear of the Lord.
Because when you have a proper view of God – YAHWEH, The Great I AM, the One who was, is, and is to come – you will fear Him. What this means is that the reality of His sovereignty and His greatness will move your heart to desire 100% holiness in all areas of your life.
When you fear Him, you will walk in purity. You will use your time wisely. You will put your hands to good work. You will not be allured by the sparkling fantasies of the world. You will be able to discern lies from truth.
The fear of the Lord is where all wisdom begins.
I pray for you even now that you will live your lives as ones who fear the Lord. Who have a proper view of God. Who have encounters with God that birth the fear of God in you. And that these encounters plant the first seeds of wisdom that grow into fullness as you grow.
My loves, it is possible to be young and yet have wisdom that is beyond your years – even wisdom that confounds your elders. This wisdom only comes from God. This is the wisdom I pray for you to possess. (Job 32:6-9)
2. You are called to love the Word.
My loves, let the Word sink deep into your soul and mind – meditate on it and write it on the tablet of your heart.
I pray that you would have a great love for the Scriptures and that they would be your guiding lamp on whatever path you take. It will be more than just a take-along addition to your journey – it will become your very life.
Live and breathe the Word.
3. You are are called to be brave.
“Be strong and courageous.” (Josh. 1:9)
There’s lots going on in the world right now that sometimes makes me wonder if I even want to bring you here. Who knows what things may be like when you arrive, when you are growing up, when you have become an adult? Who knows the kind of battles you will face?
Right now it seems that the battle to hold on to our faith in the midst of a very dark place is an all-out war. Everywhere you turn, faith is attacked.
If you want to love God with all of your heart, mind, soul and strength, it’s not going to be easy. It may even make people hate you. It’s going to be hard.
But the truth is, you are not here to make others happy. That is not the ultimate purpose of your life. When you come here to this earth, your purpose, if you choose to embrace it, is to love God with all your heart and to bring His kingdom to earth.
Bringing God’s kingdom to earth does not always look pretty. It’s because the world and the kingdom of darkness is opposed to God’s kingdom. The world doesn’t want God’s kingdom. They want to build their own.
You will have to make some very hard decisions. You may have to face great loss for your beliefs. I’m not going to make those decisions for you. I’m going to do everything in my power to point you to Jesus. More than anything I want you to be unshakeable in this world. I want you to cling to Jesus as your steady anchor so that you will not be moved when the world tries to pull you here or there. And babies, they will try. They will war for your heart and soul. They aren’t passive.
4. You are called to use your voice.
If something is wrong, speak up. Use your voice. If something is not right, be the voice of truth in your generation.
Don’t be afraid.
Live your life with no fear of what they may say or do. Live your life in the fear of the Lord.
The fear of the Lord puts to shame every other fear.
If you’re scared of what some person or people will say to you or about you or of what they will do, you don’t have a proper view of God. When your perspective of God is right – when you see Him rightly – all other fear is gone because you fear Him.
Don’t be afraid.
I’m not always perfect at this not being afraid thing; in fact, I fail so often that I exhaust myself. But I choose to get back up and try again every time I fail at this. Because every time I fail and keep going, I’m a little bit stronger. I’m a little less afraid.
What will you say in response to the hard issues? Will you know the truth and proclaim it boldly? Will you take a stand for what is right even when it seems like you are the only one doing so?
Don’t be afraid.
The Lord is on your side, precious ones.
If you are strong and take a stand, others will notice. Some will stand with you. Others will try to move you. Still others will attack you. You will be faced with more hard decisions – do I give in? Do I back down a little from my stance?
Don’t be afraid. Be strong and courageous. (Joshua 1)
5. You are called to love.
Give yourself away to love and serve others. Give your life away to love and serve others. Give of your time, your money, your efforts, your listening ears, your working hands, your loving and caring heart.
When you’re tired, ask God for strength, and then keep going. Keep serving, keep giving of yourself, keep going lower. God is glorified when we give ourselves away. And our own lives are changed too.
Sometimes, people won’t appreciate or thank you for what you do. That’s OK.
Sometimes, people won’t even notice what you do. That’s OK too.
You are not to live your life for the praises of men. When you choose love even when it’s not appreciated or even noticed, He sees.
And when He sees, you can be sure that your reward will be great.
Do the right thing when no one is watching. Do it when no one will know about it. Do it when you won’t be applauded for doing it. Why? Because this grows your character. This builds your foundation on something more steady than the ever-changing opinions of men.
When you live before His eyes, the applause of man won’t puff you up, and the frustration of being unseen won’t break you.
When you live before His eyes, your confidence isn’t based on the opinions of the world. It’s built on the Rock of His love for you, and that doesn’t change.
I wish it wasn’t so, but the truth is that you are going to be hurt – sometimes you will be hurt very deeply. No one can escape suffering.
What matters is how you choose to respond.
If you choose love, you choose gold. You choose the highest calling.
Your own heart will come out of the fire of suffering as gold.
When you are hurt, run to the One who is able and willing to mend you – don’t run away from Him.
And always choose love.
6. You are called to be pure.
Purity is not something that you get and then you’re done and on to the next virtue. Purity must be cultivated all the days of your life. It’s a battle that doesn’t end with a certain age.
Until you die and go on out of this earth, you are called to be pure. You’re called to be unpolluted by the things of this world – the lust of the eyes, the cravings of the flesh, the boasting of what one has and does, and the selfishness of greed. (1 John 2:15-17)
My loves, I want you to know that it IS possible to live in this world we live in, in the generation we are part of, in the culture that surrounds us, and be pure.
God’s grace doesn’t change.
He knew what the world was going to look like in this specific time, and He’s not surprised.
Does the moral decline of our world grieve His heart? Does it make Him sad? Does it hurt Him to see His creation living in the lesser things when they could be eternally satisfied beyond their imagination?
But He is not surprised by where the world is today. He is also not stoic or careless or powerless to do anything. He cares.
The point is, your fight for purity is already bathed with buckets of His grace.
The grace of God is limitless and His power and strength are never-ending resources for you.
Striving to walk in holiness and purity is hard. Living a life that is undefiled by the corruption of sin and darkness in this world is very rare. But it is NOT impossible.
Cultivate purity in your thought life, in the words you choose to speak, in the work you choose to do with your hands, in the way you relate to others, in what you choose to gaze on and what you read, watch, listen to. Cultivate a culture of honor for your life. Let nothing in that defiles.
And if you do? Eyes forward. Go on. Erase that and start again. Tap in to the vast ocean of the grace of God to help you.
Strive to live every single day that you are still living and breathing as one who is pure. Even to your old age and grey hairs, even in those days – you are called to be pure.
None of you will be perfect, and you will all mess up. Don’t let your failures drive you into shame. Don’t let your mistakes define you. Just get up, and start over. It may feel like your entire battle is a constant rhythm of falling down and having to start over – but don’t give up. Don’t you ever give up. As long as you are still alive, you are in charge of who wins your battles. It begins with your heart.
My loves, I pray that you will have open hearts to understand and apply the things I’ve said here. There’s so much more I could say to you, but I will save it for future letters.
Fall and stay in love with Him.
Your Future Mama
